Can I limit how deep I dig — say 2 m and then stop? (question from GA42)

Question from GA42 on our Discord, moved here so the answer stays findable for everyone:

Question about the Mining Layers mod: can you set in the mod how deep you can dig into the ground manually?
Example: if I want to dig 2 metres only, once digging has reached 2 metres into the ground no more material will fill into the bucket.
Or is that setting in the TerraFarm mod?

Hey GA 👋 Both, actually — and the easy way is on the TerraFarm side:

🎯 Exact depth (your 2 m): open the area editor of your TerraFarm area and set its target height to ground level minus 2 m. Mining Layers respects that as the pit floor: once the excavator or dozer hits that height, nothing more goes into the bucket. Since 1.6 the mod no longer touches the value you typed.

⛏️ Automatic depth (no number needed): without a target height, Mining Layers stops at the bedrock below your deepest layer. So a stack like DIRT 1 m + GRAVEL 1.5 m ends at 2.5 m by itself (editor minimums: 1 m top layer, 1.5 m below).

Tip: the excavator is the depth tool, a wheel loader only cuts 30–40 cm per pass. 🚜

More in the manual: How deep can I dig? (README, FAQ 11 and section 9).
