Why does my dozer dig in Grade mode instead of pushing?

This is the most common question we get — and it has nothing to do with Mining Layers. It sits in TerraFarm, and it can be read in the source.

What happens

If your machine has an input area assigned and active, Grade mode takes the target depth from exactly that area and digs down to it. The code behind it (MachineWorkArea:inputGrade()) is identical to the one for "Lower". The two modes only differ when no area is assigned: "Lower" then targets 0.

Without an area

TerraFarm uses the terrain height at the vehicle root node — not at the blade. If the dozer stands higher than the ground in front of it (on a ramp, on a heap, on a slope), the target sits below the ground in front of the blade. It digs itself in.

Why turning strength all the way down does not help

strength is only the brush strength per tick. The target height comes separately via setHeightTarget. That is why it still digs at low strength — just slower.

What you can do

Check the target height of your area. If you set it by hand to "surface minus first layer", that is exactly what you get: the dozer digs down to there. The side panel shows you the height to the next layer.

And for the record: Mining Layers never sets a target depth. applyLayer() only sets material and ground texture.
